Belbin Team Roles

Belbin Team Roles is a behavioural assessment comprised of both self perception inventory and observer feedback. A Belbin Team report assesses how a group of individuals will work together as a team. It details who might take on which work within the team, and where there may be gaps, overlaps or conflict in behavioural contributions.

The report helps build and cultivate great teams through its ability to allow team members to understand, recognise and maximise the behavioural strengths of others, whilst managing and containing the associated weaknesses.

As the assessment is comprised of both self perception plus observer feedback, an individual can see if how they perceive themselves is reflected or inconsistent with the way their teammates experience them. Using a combination of a team member’s self perception and observer feedback, the report sets out a team member’s strengths and possible weaknesses. The individual is provided with insights as to how their team members view them and the behavioural styles their team members experience when working with them.

The team report consolidates the information from the individual reports and highlights the range of behavioural strengths and weaknesses in the team.

A Belbin Team report can be used for:

  • Diagnosing the reasons for an underperforming team or conflict within the team

  • Exploring the strengths and weaknesses of an existing team

  • Checking that each team member is being used to their full potential

  • Ensuring that the right person is being used for each team task

  • Exploring the Team Role culture of the team or group

  • Identifying the gaps within a team, with a view to recruiting a new team member or implementing a system to plug a Team Role gap.

Team Conversation Survey

The ability of teams to deliver on their goals is directly related to the quality of their conversations.  The Team Conversation Survey, developed by Pathways of Growth and Collaborative Solutions, helps teams identify the conversation areas that a team needs to improve in order to become and maintain a high-performing team, and suggests ways in which they might achieve that.

Gallup CliftonStrengths

Grounded in nearly 6 decades of research into what sparks individual and team growth and development the Gallup CliftonStrengths tool, when used with a team, enables each individual within the team to identify, recognise and develop talents and strengths both within themselves and others. It facilitates the appreciation of others’ talents and strengths and the ability to combine them to accomplish shared goals. The Four Domains of Team Strength (outlined in the graphic below) are the distinct theme categories that have emerged from Gallup’s research on high-performing teams.

Gallup’s data provides that organisations that use CliftonStrengths in their mission, values and processes experience up to:

  • 15% higher employee engagement

  • 7% higher customer engagement

  • 29% higher profit

  • 72% lower attrition in high-turnover organisations

When applied to team leaders they learn to develop and use their strengths, assume responsibility for their blind spots and limitations and individualise their management approach to support each team member’s talents and strengths. Strengths based coaching can support teams to think about how each team member’s strengths play out in everyday situations and ways to motivate each team member using their strength profile.
